Ministry of the Word

The Lord has given me a well-trained tongue, that I may know how to speak to the weary, a word that will rouse them.  -Isaiah 50:4

The Liturgy of the Word, as a principal element of the Mass, contains the sacred texts of Scripture, revealing God speaking to his people.  Readers are called forth to proclaim the readings from Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel.  They may also announce the intentions for the general intercessions and, in the absence of the cantor of the Psalms, read the responsorial psalm between the readings.  The Ministry of the Word calls for a person to grow in a warm and loving knowledge of Scripture, the Living Word of God.  He/she is invited to enter a relationship with the Word that is creative, powerful and effective.  A reader is called to be a communicator and a story teller of the richness of God’s love for His people.

Through your proclamation, the Word of God is alive with power, achieving the sanctification of those to whom it is proclaimed and giving glory to God, whose creative Word brought all good things into being.

Requirements:

• High School junior or older.
• Have good reading skills.
• Believe and understand what you read.
• Before your scheduled time, prepare and practice to read well.
• Be dependable and punctual when scheduled.
• Be willing to improve their skills by attending occasional workshops and utilizing publications.
• Be totally committed to their ministry.
• Reading assignment approximately once per month.
